Scholarship in Economics for Graduated Students
The Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education - Economics Institute offers the program of doctoral studies in theoretical and applied economics, leading to a PhD degree which is fully accredited in the United States and in the Czech Republic.
The PhD program consists of two years of coursework followed by two years of supervised dissertation research. The working language of the institution is English. CERGE-EI encourages its students to conduct part of their dissertation research at partner institutions in Western Europe and North America, as well as to participate in collaborative research projects in other countries.
The application deadline is February 28, 2010.
Most students are granted tuition waivers and stipends for up to four years of study - no separate application is necessary. Successful applicants will be invited to participate in a competitive two-month Preparatory semester in July and August, after which final admissions decisions will be made. Students can ask for travel expenses coverage. The request for such grant should be attached to the application form and should free-format clearly explain why such grant is needed.
Eligibility for Study
Any individual from any country is welcome to submit an application to CERGE-EI without the assistance of a third party. There is no application fee. All admissions decisions are made internally at CERGE-EI by the faculty admissions committee.
CERGE-EI does not discriminate on the basis of national origin, race, gender, or religion. Students are expected to have a good background in mathematics as well as sufficient proficiency in English to read, write and fully understand study material. Previous education in economics is welcomed, though not required. Applicants to both the Ph.D. and M.A. programs must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree, although the vast majority of admitted students already has an M.A or equivalent degree.
All students are urged to submit a TOEFL or other certified English language exam score, as well as GRE (or other proficiency test) scores.
How to Apply
The following materials are required in order for an application to be processed:
Application form - we strongly encourage you to fill in the online application form. It enables us to keep track of your application prior to the arrival of your completed application package. The application is also available in PDF (you may want to send a hard copy of the application form along with your other application materials).
Curriculum vitae
Statement of motivation - 1000–2000-word statement explaining your academic and research background and interests, your career goals, and how the program at CERGE-EI will help you meet your objectives. Please see the Statement of Motivation Guidelines.
Certified copies of all your diplomas, including their translation to English.
Official transcripts from all universities attended, including their translation to English.
Two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with your academic background (forms available below).
ALL MATERIALS MUST BE IN ENGLISH OR MUST BE ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS ACCOMPANIED BY ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS. (The translation must be official: either as part of the diploma or a certified translation).
Admission Process
Approximately 90 candidates are invited to attend the summer Preparatory semester, a two-month semester beginning at the end of June or early July. Performance in macroeconomics, microeconomics, mathematics, and English academic writing courses taken during the Preparatory semester determines which students are finally admitted to the program, which typically begins the first week of September.
Tuition
Tuition for the academic year is 12 000 EUR. The fee is to be paid each semester by the first day of classes. For payment instructions, please contact us.
Most students are granted tuition waivers and stipends or salaries for up to five years of study. No separate application is necessary for this.
Financial Support
The financial conditions described below apply only to students who obtained an M.A. or equivalent degree prior to their studies at CERGE-EI. Students with a B.A. or equivalent degree are enrolled in the U.S.-accredited program(s), but not in the equivalent Czech-accredited program. As such, they may receive reduced stipends, may not be eligible for accommodation at Charles University dormitories, and may not be eligible for health insurance coverage and similar benefits. The exact level of financial support for incoming students with B.A. degrees will be determined on an individual basis.
In the first year, students at CERGE-EI receive a stipend of 9500 CZK. This amount can be increased by 1500-2000 CZK on the basis of outstanding performance or lowered to the minimum amount of 8000 CZK ("basic stipend") if the student does not fulfill the academic requirements.
The level of the stipend rises with each successfully completed year (reaching 12 500 CZK in the fourth year, which is the last year when students is entitled to stipend)). With the exception of first-year, first-semester students, students receiving a stipend are typically required to fulfill an assistantship (such as a research assistantship or teaching assistantship) each month as part of their study program.
Fifth-year students receive funding in the form of a salary - through employment as Junior Economic Institute Researchers (JEIRs). Selected third and fourth-year students are eligible for this form of support as well.
